Refuge for Abused and Neglected Equines

Our organization strives to rescue, rehabilitate, and provide a good home for animals whenever and wherever we can. We do everything in our power to give them love and much-needed care. Most cases of neglect and abuse happen when a person can no longer take care of the animal or does not have the understanding from the beginning.

Equine Slaughter

Horse slaughter happens every day. Even horses as young as one week old are slaughtered in an inhumane way. A nail gun is used to shoot a bolt, which does not always kill them instantly, into their heads.

Nearly 100,000 horses are slaughtered every year in the United States and used for food outside of the country. We have included links below about horse slaughter and sites that sell products made from the killed animals. Some of these items are very graphic, but please take the time to read the facts so that you are properly informed.

Ohio’s Equine Rescue Laws

To understand the horse rescue procedures in Ohio, you must know that our state has the worst laws governing rescues nationwide. Ohio State Law classifies horses as “livestock”, right along with cows, goats, etc. Fortunately, dogs and cats are governed by Animal Protective Leagues (APL’s) and are considered pets. Horses, however, cannot be taken off of the property even when they are in deplorable conditions.

Horses rescued in Ohio must be purchased at current market value unless the owner agrees to give up the animal. The price to rescue an animal, along with vet care, shots, worming, teeth floating, farrier care of feet, hay, grain, vitamin and mineral supplements, shavings for bedding, and equipment, is extremely costly.

Our horse rescue relies on volunteers and donations. Volunteers clean stalls and groom and train horses, while donations help with fulfilling the organization’s initiatives and operations.
